Simple Breakfast

For this side of the world summer is here, and strawberries are plentiful. My favorite breakfast is fast, simple and perfect for Sabbath morning. Give it a try.
You'll love it!

Berry Breakfast Parfait

1 cup Strawberries, hulled and quartered

1 Banana, peeled and sliced

1 cup Vanilla Yogurt

1/4 cup Granola

Put prepared fruit in bottom of bowl or parfait dish. Top with yogurt, and sprinkle on granola.

It's that simple!

I make my own granola. I'll share the recipe later. It's SO easy!

Away for the Weekend!

This weekend marks the first of three Women's Ministries weekends that will be held at Camp Au Sable. This is an amazing annual event that has grown over the years from one weekend to three! It is the most wonderful weekend for women that consists of seminars pertinent to life as a woman, life in Christ, family, food, and friendship. They really do pull out all the stops, and I look forward to it every year.

It is tradition, a tradition that started before I joined in the fun, with the ladies I will be traveling with to leave first thing in the morning and stop at Birch Run for breakfast, shopping, and lunch then head the rest of the way to Grayling. God has blessed me immensely by the women he has been putting into my life. The majority of the friends I seem to make are usually 20 years my senior, and what a gift! There is so much to be learned from a mature, Godly woman that has traveled 20 years before you. Oh, the wisdom!

I will most cerainly have things to share upon my return. In the meantime, keep stopping by. If you never have checked out my archives, have a look. I'm headed toward my 200th post, so there's bound to be one that will speak to you. Have a wonderful weekend, a Happy Sabbath, and be sure to hug someone you love.

It's the Sabbath!

This is a long and wonderful post written about one person's journey to discover for himself the true Sabbath. If you have an interest in further exploration, please click here.

Friendship, Health, and Changes

Life seems to throw just as many curve balls as it can at me. It has just always seemed to be that way. I used to think it was normal. It seems to me now that it is just my normal. I used to long for a more laid back life, but I do not believe that is what God has intended for me, at least not right now. Sometimes I wonder just what it is that He is training me to be prepared for. I often feel that it must be big. I have gotten to a point where there really isn't anything that phases me anymore. How could it?

It would seem that, if nothing else, I have learned how to take things in stride. This does not mean, however, that I do not get overwhelmed or worn out at times. Trust me. I do, and I am teetering on the brink right now. Honestly, I am just so stinkin' tired. I feel like I need a vacation; big time!

We always seem to spend our time transitioning from one thing, or two or three, to another. It has gotten to a point that weekends are not even a refuge or place of relaxation. Sabbath just isn't long enough for me to recuperate. I honestly need a couple weeks of doing nothing to heal. That will come, but not soon enough.

My plate is very full, and some of the things going on right now are emotionally draining. We were just coming to terms with the fact that our pastor and his wife, whom we consider friends, will be moving to Lansing to work at the Conference Office when we learned that "Mrs. Pastor" has been diagnosed with leukemia. She is now in Texas receiving the best care in the nation, praise God!

We are also making an effort and commitment to changing things in our relationship in connection with our relationship to each other, God, and our children. This is a big undertaking that we seem to have to fight for. With demands on each of us so taxing and time consuming the undertaking seems impossible. It is not enough to make the commitment. It is not enough to have the desire. It is not enough to talk about and plan for it. We actually have to fight to make it happen. A month's time has now passed since the boys and I committed fully to the keeping of the Sabbath together. Every Sabbath something has interfered on some level with our intention and plans. In the same way, my husband and I came back from the marriage commitment weekend with desires and ambitions for change. Not one has happened. The enemy is strong and works hard to trip us up. We have to be stronger and fight harder to make any progress at all. It is SO challenging.

Another really emotionally taxing thing has been the challenges of raising and relating to my 15 year old. Anyone that has been 15, has a 15 year old, or has had a 15 year old can surely relate. This is such a tough age. So much is happening. We are a child and a young adult all at the same time. We long for independence and guidance both at the same time. Our emotions and hormones are completely out of whack. Life is confusing, challenging, interesting, and frustrating on many levels. It is tough to be 15, and it is tough to peacefully parent a 15 year old.

Then there is the growth rate of our family. I often feel that there is just not enough of me to go around. Our grandchildren are coming at me the same way that our children did, all at once! There is barely time to get to know one, and then there is another, or two, or three. I so want to be a part of the lives of all of our grandchildren. I am uncertain as to how to successfully manage being a Nana and a mom to teens at the same time. If we were not homeschooling this would likely be a little less challenging, but challenging nonetheless.

My health is also a small factor. Yesterday, I went for a biopsy on my right breast. I discovered a tumor there last year. They believe it to be benign, but due to my family and personal history they wanted to play it safe and just make sure there is nothing to be concerned with. It was an interesting and taxing experience. There is now a tiny, titanium, breast cancer ribbon implanted in my breast to mark the tumor letting them know in future exams that that particular tumor has already been biopsied. I also participated in a study that is very interesting. They are doing research on a technique that would take the place of the mammogram. It is awesome, and I hope it is available as an option in the future.

I am also thankful for the friendships that I am forming. I have met some wonderful women over the past few years. The friendships have developed slowly over time, and are now starting to bloom. It is a wonderful gift to have one good friend, and I have had one for over 25 years. She is a sister to me, and I thank God for her frequently. What a special treat it is to make new friends and learn how to be a friend. That can be a challenge for some of us. There are trust issues, time constraints, and other factors.

Life is full of challenges, surprises, and adventurers. What a huge lot this is. Thanks be to God for His presence in my life. I cannot imagine managing any of this without Him. I would surely be lost.

Entrecard, Top Dropper

I am setting this up for automated post, since today is Sabbath and my top droppers are competing so earnestly. I was planning to have my post written for automated post to announce the top dropper, but it is way too close to call ahead of time and changes back and forth daily. So, we will just have to wait and see. Last month's winner has some aggressive competition!

I will try to get on later tonight and post the top dropper, but no promises. My oldest son, Andrew (17), is getting baptized today. Praise God! Needless to say, this will be a day of celebration. Family first, then blogging.

Watch for my announcement soon!

Happy Sabbath!

Today, I thought I would share a recipe. This is a great standby. It is simple, nutritious, delicious, and can be cooked in the crockpot. Perfect for a Sabbath meal. What more could you ask for? Enjoy!

Pottage of Lentils

This stew-like soup is a scrumptious and hearty meal. Perfect for a cold winter's day served with a nice loaf of crusty bread.

4 Large Red Potatoes, chopped
4 Cups Vegetable Stock, near boil

3 Bay Leafs

Saute vegetables in olive oil until tender.

Add all ingredients to crockpot. Cook on high for one hour.

Change temperature to low. Cook another five hours.

Add the following ingredients:

Happy Sabbath!

(Exodus 20:8-11 NRSV) Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work--you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

Creative Ideas for Sabbath Celebration

Light a special candle just for the Sabbath

Take a walk, alone or with family members

Do something special for yourself like taking a nap or a bubble bath

Leave the computer, television and telephone off

Do a Bible Study, alone or with family members

Make a Sabbath meal and take time to savor it

Write a list of your spiritual gifts or ways you have been blessed

Play a game with your children or do a fun craft together

Visit an elderly or disabled person and bring them a meal

Make cards for the sick, shut-ins, or military personnel

Volunteer at a local homeless shelter

Do a kind deed for a neighbor

The above are just some ideas out of many. It is my intention to get you thinking of ways that the Sabbath can be special for you and your family. We are still learning in our home as well. We discovered the Sabbath later in life with only three children still at home that are teens. It can be challenging to get everyone to slow down and savor this wonderful gift from God. I will continue to share our discoveries, triumphs, and failures throughout our journey.

Happy Sabbath!

This Sabbath I thought I would share a recipe that I found over at The Krazy Kyles. This is a great recipe for Sabbath since it can easily be made ahead. I will be trying it very soon. Enjoy!

Bran - Orange Muffins (Jerry & Patti Kyle)

Makes enough for 4 batches

4 cups Oat Bran
4 cups Flour (white)
3 cups Oatmeal
3 cups Raisins
2 cups Brown Sugar
1 cup Chopped Dried Apricots
1/4 cup Baking Powder
4 t. Cinnamon
2 t. Salt

Mix up and store for future muffin making.

To make the muffins add:

2 cups of mix
equal parts of applesauce and soy milk producing a consistency similar to hot cereal

Also add goodies such as:

Blueberries
Cranberries
Orange Rind
Walnuts
Diced Apples

Put in muffin cups and bake at 375 for about 25 minutes.
